The post Strength, Saunas & Supplements to Lead 2025, Life Time Finds appeared first on Athletech News.
]]>Life Time, renowned for its amenity-rich luxury clubs where waitlists are the norm, has unveiled findings from its annual health and wellness survey, offering a glimpse into what 2025 may hold for fitness and wellness consumers.
More than 1,350 individuals (both general consumers and Life Time members) participated in the survey, which was conducted from December 11 to December 23.
Here are some key takeaways from Life Time’s 2025 Wellness Survey:
According to Life Time’s findings, things are off to a good start when it comes to consumer interest in health and fitness. Notably, 74.7% of respondents plan to prioritize their health in 2025—a nearly 20% increase from 2024.
Building strength emerged as a top goal for the third consecutive year, followed by improved nutrition, increased physical activity and weight loss.
Ahead of 2025, Life Time discovered that over half of respondents (69.1%) plan to increase their time spent in the sauna or try it for the first time in the new year. On the other hand, 42.4% expressed interest in using ice baths or cryotherapy, while 50% are looking to explore assisted stretching services.
Regarding GLP-1s, over half (60.8%) believe weight loss medications have the potential to improve overall health. It’s an area Life Time has invested in with the launch of Miora, which is centered on longevity, weight loss and performance protocols and offers weight loss medications.
Well over half (59.5%) of respondents reported taking a daily supplement, with protein powder, multivitamins and vitamin D being the most popular choices. Regarding new nutrition and wellness trends, nearly half (48.6%) said they prefer guidance from certified professionals.
When it comes to fitness apps, most respondents use them primarily for workouts, followed by data tracking, nutrition and meditation.
Finally, survey participants identified strength training as their preferred workout method, slightly edging out cardio-focused workouts.
“People of all ages are realizing the benefits of strength training and recovery by making it a priority in their routine,” said Danny King, Life Time’s director of recovery and performance. “At Life Time, we’re continuing to expand the size of our strength training spaces and recovery zones on our exercise floors, prioritizing equipment that fits a variety of body types and doubling down on our digital content.”
King also noted Life Time’s complimentary digital app, which makes it easy for users to discover strength training routines and coaching.

]]>Planet Fitness has committed to becoming the top fitness operator for the most dedicated gym-goers and is already delivering on its promise.
The fitness giant has kicked off a limited-time offer just in time for New Year’s resolutions and plans to continue adding new plate-loaded strength equipment to nearly all U.S. locations in 2025, driven by the rising interest in strength training.
The new strength-focused equipment — which includes the Magnum Supine Bench Press, Hack Squat and Seated Calf Machine — has already been added to more than 1,700 Planet Fitness clubs.
“Consumers are seeking more options for strength training as their fitness needs evolve, and Planet Fitness is a place where everyone can get strong and achieve their goals in the New Year,” Planet Fitness chief brand officer Jamie Medeiros said. “We offer a high-value fitness experience, with a wide variety of both strength and cardio equipment, ensuring everyone can work out their way.”
In addition to its equipment initiatives, new Planet Fitness CEO Colleen Keating outlined a broader marketing strategy for the fitness franchisor on a call with investors last month.
“We’re beginning the shift to communicating the high value of a Planet Fitness membership versus primarily focusing on our low price and using our marketing to demonstrate the breadth of high-quality top-tier equipment in our club,” Keating said.
Prospective Planet Fitness members can now sign up at any U.S. location through January 10 for just $1 down and $15 per month, with the flexibility to cancel at any time.
“We encourage everyone to take advantage of our limited-time membership offer and join our inspiring and supportive fitness community where everyone can grow stronger together,” Medeiros continued.
While the high-value, low-priced operator’s new join offer gets underway, Planet Fitness is gearing up to celebrate its tenth year as presenting sponsor of the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration and is headed into 2025 with a strong start, according to analysts.

]]>The post Study Links Poor Air Quality to Slower Marathon Finish Times appeared first on Athletech News.
]]>Marathon runners meticulously plan their training, gear, and nutrition — but new research from Brown University suggests they may also need to consider air quality. A study published in Sports Medicine has found that fine particulate matter in the air can significantly impact race-day performance, even for the healthiest athletes.
Analyzing data from more than 2.5 million marathon finishers across nine major U.S. marathons between 2003 and 2019, researchers discovered that higher levels of fine particulate matter correlated with slower average finish times. Male runners experienced a 32-second delay per 1 µg/m³ increase in air pollution, while female runners saw a 25-second delay.
While these delays might seem minor, they are critical for runners striving for personal bests or professional records.
“Think of all the effort a professional runner like Eliud Kipchoge puts into breaking world records,” said study author Elvira Fleury, a former graduate student at Brown and current doctoral student at Harvard University. “Our results show that air pollution can’t be ignored by those aiming to optimize performance.”
The study utilized a sophisticated spatial-temporal model to measure air pollution levels at specific points along marathon routes. The findings revealed that even pollution levels below current health standards negatively impacted athletes.
Joseph Braun, professor of epidemiology at Brown, highlighted the broader implications: “This study shows air pollution affects not just the elderly or susceptible populations, but also the fittest and healthiest among us.”
The researchers suggest that regulating emissions from power generation, transportation and industry could improve overall health outcomes and athletic performance.
For endurance athletes and coaches, the study underscores the importance of factoring in environmental conditions during race planning. As marathons grow in popularity, awareness of air quality may become as crucial as proper hydration or pacing strategies.

]]>The post iFIT’s Hybrid Features Are Leading the Fitness Community into the Future appeared first on Athletech News.
]]>As the modern fitness age begins to take form, gyms and fitness studios are reaching out by the many to offer new modalities, benefits and methods of application. Few, if any, are going further than iFIT, the global fitness technology company.
iFIT, Inc., with support from its commercial equipment division Freemotion Fitness, has an extensive history of making versatile digital fitness options available to a wide audience, most recently with its AI Coach and new suite of smart machines. In doing so, iFIT has solidified itself as a leading facilitator of hybrid fitness.
Hybrid fitness is the concept of working out in different environments whether you are at home, at a gym, or on the go, integrating both in-person and digital elements. This approach allows individuals to participate in a range of activities — such as strength training, cardio, and yoga—through live classes, on-demand videos or virtual sessions. By leveraging technology for personalized fitness plans, hybrid fitness fosters community and accessibility, making it easier for people to maintain an active lifestyle.
“Hybrid fitness” is also about more than your environment, it represents the different ways you can tackle your wellbeing. iFIT intentionally goes beyond standard fitness with its content, touching on an abundance of factors like mental health, general fitness education and more.
Addressing Mental Health
More than one in every five adults in the United States lives with some sort of mental illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It would be a miss not to address the connective tissue between the body and mind. As a sector that looks to improve population health, the fitness industry has both a responsibility and an opportunity to play a vital role in this growing issue.
As well as providing safe and supportive spaces for people to exercise, creating inclusive environments and training staff to be more aware of their members’ mental health needs, the fitness industry can also harness technology in these efforts.
For iFIT, addressing wellbeing is top of mind. The brand works to establish a community feeling with engaging and supportive workout content. Take its Heart to Heart series for example, which takes users on a walk with iFIT trainers who share the ups and downs of their personal stories of overcoming hardship.
“iFIT’s trainers connect users at a human level with content series like Heart to Heart,” said Kelly Fuson, iFIT Senior Director of Global Marketing, Commercial. “This is something you could do in the gym, on a cardio machine at home, or outside in nature.”
Additional series that help to address wellbeing include the Anxiety: Work It Out Series with iFIT Guide Dr. Jarrod Spencer, which shares anxiety-relieving advice during virtual walks through the Caribbean and the Climbing to the Top Series with iFIT Trainer George Hincapie, which takes you to the peak of the legendary Haleakalā Volcano and includes stories of mental resilience.
Wellness IQ
The concept of a Wellness IQ has come up more recently as a way to measure how savvy an athlete may be at understanding their own fitness and wellbeing and how to improve it. It acknowledges that we are all on a unique journey and discovering what works for each individual and how to go about doing it properly, whether it be stretching, strength, or cardio.
iFIT offers users a very inclusive experience, no matter their level of fitness. For those who might be intimidated at first in gym environments – and would perhaps prefer a more remote setting in which to take the first steps of their fitness journey – iFIT provides beginner-friendly and convenient workout options that can help individuals make the most of their gym memberships over time as they gain more knowledge and confidence.
“The beauty of iFIT is that it allows people who might be new to fitness or just starting their journey to accomplish a specific goal become more confident with different types of workouts and techniques at their own pace and in any setting they feel comfortable in,” said Fuson. “The ultimate goal is to serve an athlete at each step of their journey, one that hopefully has them maximizing their gym, studio, or even corporate fitness center through content that comes to life on our Freemotion cardio machines or through strength training with our GENESIS cable machines.”
iFIT’s open and versatile form of educational content combined with its high-quality machines paves the way to an evolved, more fitness-literate world.
“A goal of ours is to either be a gateway to hiring a personal trainer, or help augment an existing personal training plan by filling in the gaps in between sessions, and over time increase an athlete’s Wellness IQ,” Fuson added.
Hybrid Fitness Appeals to All
Consistent gym goers, moderate fitness enjoyers, those who like to experiment with new modalities or just casual consumers all stand to benefit from iFIT’s Hybridization, as the brand offers features catering to all consumer identities.
Today, however, those who lead a balanced lifestyle between physical, nutritional and mental wellbeing and those who continually evaluate new fitness programs, products and services are experiencing the most growth year-over-year, according to iFIT.
The needs and wants of modern fitness consumers are changing. An increasing number now look to improve their overall health and wellbeing – including mental health – rather than to purely build muscle. With its inclusive approach and huge variety of options that cater to people of all ages and backgrounds, iFIT offers the perfect hybrid solution to fitness operators – no matter who their members are.

]]>The post The Fitness & Wellness Trends To Watch in 2025 appeared first on Athletech News.
]]>The global wellness market is projected to grow to nearly $9 trillion in 2028 as consumers embrace new ways of living, moving and being.
This is good news for the fitness industry, which is enjoying increased foot traffic at gyms and strong member engagement numbers, although getting more Americans involved in fitness remains a vexing problem.
The rise of longevity services, GLP-1 weight-loss drugs and holistic wellness presents massive opportunities for fitness brands, but also exposes the industry to increased competition from new entrants. Meanwhile, the popularity of strength training is reshaping the way gyms look across the globe, while the rise of AI begins to transform the way fitness brands do business.
To get you ready for a new year, Athletech News breaks down the top fitness and wellness trends to watch in 2025:
The longevity movement took off in 2024 as medical professionals, influencers and everyday wellness enthusiasts alike became enthralled with the idea that scientific breakthroughs and lifestyle choices can help people live better, for longer.
Amid this backdrop, longevity and recovery services are steadily making their way inside gyms, health clubs and studios. High-end brands like Life Time and Equinox now offer their members access to services including weight-loss support, biomarker blood testing and personalized health plans (for an extra fee), pushing us closer to a reality where the gym replaces – or at least competes with – the doctor’s office.
On the more modest end of the pricing spectrum, high-value, low-price (HVLP) gym chains including Crunch Fitness, Chuze Fitness, EōS Fitness and others are adding recovery modalities like infrared saunas, along with “recovery rooms” stocked with massage guns, massage chairs and more. With premium memberships at HVLP gyms available for $40/month or less, it’s becoming easier than ever to get a holistic wellness experience at your local big box.
The rise of longevity isn’t relegated to gyms and studios, either. Wellness and longevity centers are popping up across the United States, offering everything from GLP-1s to cryotherapy to testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Restore Hyper Wellness is the leader with over 200 locations, but emerging brands like Next Health, Serotonin Centers, Lindora and Humanaut Health are projecting growth in the years ahead.
Direct-to-consumer longevity is big business, too. According to a survey conducted by YouGov, 45% of Americans say they’re taking supplements to fight the aging process. Timeline, a maker of supplements with an active ingredient designed to slow aging at the cellular level, raised $66 million in funding in early 2024.
Those bullish on the science of longevity believe the movement is just starting to gain a critical mass in America.
“Today, when I talk to people about slowing down aging, nine out of 10 are telling me, “I shouldn’t be doing it,’” Anar Isman, the CEO of longevity startup AgelessRx, told ATN. “I envision a world in five to 10 years where that’s going to completely flip on its head, where nine out of 10 people are going to be saying, ‘You don’t want to slow down aging? What’s wrong with you?’”
Fitness wearables are more popular than ever – nearly half of all consumers surveyed by McKinsey reported having purchased a fitness wearable at some point in time. Wearables have also come a long way from the days of simply tracking steps and calories burned from workouts.
As tech advances, wearable makers are envisioning a future where your smartwatch, smart ring or other tracking device becomes your personal health companion.
Smart ring giant Oura acquired metabolic health company Veri earlier this year and has partnered with Dexcom, makers of the first FDA-cleared over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor (CGM) device. Oura and Dexcom are working to create an ecosystem where users can understand how their glucose levels interact with metrics like activity, sleep and stress. Oura is also highly active in women’s health, adding features like Cycle Insights and Pregnancy Insights, along with perimenopause features.
“Wearable tech is for anyone who wants to better understand the state of their health and live more optimally, for longer,” Oura CEO Tom Hale has said.
Garmin is also working to make its smartwatches part of the future of healthcare, something the brand has termed “smartwatch-enabled digital health.” Thanks to Garmin Health, Garmin wearables have been part of more than 1,000 research studies in areas including sleep, well-being, rehabilitation, physical activity, and disease management.
Not to be outdone, Apple has also signaled its ambitions to play a bigger role in healthcare in the years ahead, with Apple Watches at the forefront.
“It’s clear to me that if you zoom out way into the future, and you look back and ask what Apple’s biggest contribution was, it will be in the health area,” Apple CEO Tim Cook told “Wired” in December.
We named strength training as one of our trends to watch in 2024, and the modality has only increased in popularity since then. Appreciated for its anti-aging, functional and metabolism-boosting benefits, strength training is everywhere, from gyms to TikTok. Even Peloton has embraced the modality, releasing a dedicated strength training app in hopes of bringing more fitness fans into its ranks.
Big-box gyms across the country are racing to add strength training equipment like Olympic lifting platforms and other free weights to their fitness floors while ditching cardio equipment. Some gyms are even rethinking their group exercise offerings to account for the rise of strength – Vasa Fitness will introduce Studio LFT, a group-based strength training class featuring power racks, benches and plyometric boxes, in early 2025.
Strength training isn’t just lifting heavy weights, though. Pilates’ surge in popularity over the past few years is thanks in no small part to a rise in awareness around the benefits of strength training. Functional fitness concepts like Pvolve have also become highly popular since the pandemic, buoyed by women embracing strength training in larger numbers than ever before.
Pvolve president Julie Cartwright believes strength training is here to stay since people are becoming more aware of the science-backed benefits of adding muscle, especially for longevity.
“I really do think it’s education in the marketplace,” Cartwright told ATN when asked about strength training’s rise and staying power. “Post-COVID, we’re all taking a more active role in our own self-care, in living better, longer. There’s (more) messaging about the importance of muscle mass and what it does for your longevity and health span.”
AI is changing the world, but will it actually change the way we work out?
Much has been made in fitness industry circles about the promises (and potential nightmares) of artificial intelligence, but if you ask most gym-goers, the way they participate in fitness probably hasn’t changed too much since before the emergence of ChatGPT.
“I think much of the AI application in the gym space has been somewhat overhyped,” Matt Wright, the vice president of growth and development at gym chain Healthtrax Fitness & Wellness, has told ATN.
Can the fitness industry make AI a bigger part of the in-gym experience? Should it?
Future is using AI to democratize access to virtual personal training, Lumin fitness has big expansion plans as the world’s first AI-powered boutique fitness studio and at-home fitness brands like Tempo and Tonal are using AI to make strength training effective and easy for newbies and fitness buffs alike.
But as we head into 2025, those brands remain the exceptions rather than the norm. Despite this, some insiders believe it’s just a matter of time before the gym is transformed by AI and other tech.
“I think in the next 5, 10, years in the U.S., you’re going to see transformative changes within gyms, where technology and AI – and personalization of training programs – is going to take place,” Marc Magliacano, a managing partner at private equity firm L Catterton, said during ATN’s DISRUPT 2024 video series earlier this year.
If Magliacano’s AI prediction comes to pass, it could spell bad news for real-life personal trainers.
“Unfortunately, I believe that personal training from a human perspective will be under review, frankly, just to say it nicely,” he said.
The fitness and wellness industry has rebounded quite nicely from the pandemic, and investors are taking notice.
2024 was marked by high-profile deals including L Catterton’s acquisition of Solidcore and the firm’s investment into fitness tech brand EGYM, as well as the mega merger between Anytime Fitness parent company Self Esteem Brands and Orangetheory Fitness.
Meanwhile, private equity groups continue to pour money into large franchisee groups, enabling sophisticated operators to create large portfolios of franchised gym brands in systems including Crunch Fitness, Planet Fitness and Anytime Fitness.
Consolidation is also happening at the corporate level as larger fitness brands buy up smaller ones. Barre3, a barre fitness franchise brand with around 200 locations nationwide, has acquired competitors including The Barre Code and Barre Centric, while gym giant LA Fitness acquired XSport Fitness earlier this year.
Experts have told ATN they expect to see more big-time investments in fitness brands in 2025 as people embrace health and wellness – and as the industry moves further away from the carnage of the pandemic.
“2025 is going to be a huge year for fitness” in terms of deal-making, Jeremy Hirsch, head of franchise and multi-unit services at Houlihan Lokey, predicts. “You’re going to have a lot of investors spending a lot of time on this category.”

]]>The post New Bill Would Force Gyms To Carry Accessible Equipment appeared first on Athletech News.
]]>Congressional Democrats are renewing their push for a bill that would require gyms and fitness facilities around the country to carry fitness equipment that’s accessible for people with disabilities and potentially hire additional staff members.
Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (D-Calif.) on Tuesday introduced a bill designed “to promote the provision of exercise machines and equipment, and exercise and fitness classes and instruction, that are accessible to individuals with disabilities.”
DeSaulnier’s bill seems to be a companion to the “Exercise and Fitness for All Act of 2024,” which was introduced by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) this summer.
Duckworth’s bill contains language that would require gyms and other fitness facilities to offer “accessible exercise machines and equipment” to people with disabilities. It would also mandate that gyms and fitness facilities have at least one staff member on the floor at all times who is “trained to provide assistance to individuals with disabilities.”
If passed, the bill would direct the United States Access Board, a federal agency devoted to accessibility, to create guidelines for gyms and fitness facilities regarding accessible equipment.
Duckworth, who has served as a U.S. senator since 2017, is an Iraq War veteran who lost both of her legs and partial use of her right arm in a helicopter accident during the war. She told Forbes this summer that since her injury, she’s encountered difficulties “finding fitness equipment I could use” in gyms.
Duckworth has introduced the Exercise and Fitness for All Act before, including in 2021.
“I thought, ‘We really need to make sure people can access fitness facilities,’” Duckworth told Forbes regarding her motivation to re-introduce the bill this past summer.
While several legislative hurdles remain before the Exercise and Fitness for All Act of 2024 can become law, the fitness industry is already beginning to grapple with new federal regulations.
In October, the Federal Trade Commission instituted a new “click to cancel” rule that will make it easier for consumers to cancel paid subscriptions, including gym memberships. The Health & Fitness Association (HFA), the fitness industry’s biggest trade group, has said the rule will create regulatory “burdens that will disproportionately affect small businesses” like mom-and-pop gyms and small fitness studios.
For more information on federal and state legislation affecting the fitness industry, see here.

]]>The post Physical Activity Can Add 5+ Years to Your Life, Study Finds appeared first on Athletech News.
]]>It’s no secret that physical activity leads to a healthier, longer life. But for those over, or at least getting close to the hill, this is especially true, a new study suggests.
Researchers working with the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that low physical activity (PA) is tied to increased mortality. The researchers used a predictive model based on device-measured PA risk estimates and a life-table model analysis to establish results. The life table used included 2019 United States population and 2017 mortality data. Participants were 40 years or older with PA levels based on data from the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey.
The study discovered that if all individuals were as active as the top 25% of the population, Americans over the age of 40 could live an extra 5.3 years on average. Dr. Mary Njeri Wanjau, who worked on the project, called the five-year figure “whopping” while referring to it on social media.
The trial also saw individuals in the lowest activity quartile experience the largest bump in lifetime per hour through PA as simple as walking. An additional hour of doing so could add roughly 6.3 hours of life expectancy, per the report.
While notable, these findings follow what we’ve heard from the industry at large, specifically regarding older individuals. Another study earlier this year found that weight training can offer long-term health benefits for individuals of a “retirement age.” While 40 is a long way from senior citizenry, an additional study also found that HIIT may improve cognitive health for those aged 65 to 86.
The British Journal of Sports Medicine also recently discovered a link between high cardiorespiratory fitness and reduced risk of Dementia. It published other findings this year from the University of Sydney explaining how a few minutes of vigorous, incidental PA a day can significantly reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in middle-aged women who don’t engage in structured exercise.

]]>The post These Fitness Trends Could Dominate in 2025, Google Data Shows appeared first on Athletech News.
]]>Fitness trends come and go, but search data can offer insight into how people prioritize health and wellness. Fitness search data from the past year demonstrates the rise of emerging movements and nostalgic favorites, along with the fall of some former fitness fads.
Athletech News breaks down the fitness trends that saw the biggest increases in Google search activity in 2024, according to data from PureGym’s annual fitness report.
Leading the pack as the fastest-growing fitness trend of 2024 is remote personal training, which saw a 414% increase in interest year-over-year. Once a necessity during the pandemic, virtual training has evolved into a preferred choice for many consumers.
Another highlight of 2024 was the continued rise of Hyrox, a competitive fitness race that combines endurance and functional strength.
Hyrox had a 233% increase in searches year-on-year, likely due in part to international expansion. One in ten people planning to participate in a fitness-themed event in 2024 either entered or planned to enter a Hyrox event, according to PureGym data.
TikTok’s impact on health and fitness trends remains undeniable, with the “30-30-30 rule” emerging as a standout trend in 2024. Searches for this concept—which involves eating 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking up, followed by 30 minutes of low-intensity exercise—spiked by 175%.
The rule’s resurgence is largely credited to TikTok personality and biologist/biohacker Gary Brecka, whose videos have brought renewed attention to this weight-loss strategy.
“Quadrobics,” a full-body workout inspired by animal movements, saw a 174% increase in searches. Primal fitness – which also includes movements like crawling, climbing, and balancing – has become popular for its focus on natural, functional movements. Many fitness enthusiasts are drawn to these workouts for their ability to improve overall body awareness, coordination, and core strength.
Retro fitness trends made a major comeback in 2024, with step aerobics (+124%) and rollerblading (+123%) ranking among the top searches. Step aerobics, in particular, has found new life through creative choreography and integration into high-energy group classes. Rollerblading has also become a popular way to combine cardio and outdoor fun.
Other notable fitness searches in 2024 included:
Wall Pilates, which involves using a wall for extra resistance, experienced a 55% decline in searches as the year progressed. Similarly, TikTok-driven trends like soft hiking, a more relaxed approach to the activity (-56%), and 12-3-30, a popular treadmill activity that involves walking at an inclination of 12% at 3 miles per hour for 30 minutes (-55%), saw significant drops in interest.
Data for this article was sourced from PureGym’s annual UK Fitness Report, which ranked 2024 trends based on percentage increase in Google searches between July – September 2023 and July – September 2024.

]]>A gym floor packed with treadmills, benches and bikes is not what it used to be. Although it was once a sight to behold for fitness enthusiasts, it’s now a stressor in the eyes of many, according to Aktiv Solutions, a leading commercial and home gym design company.
“For many years, gyms have been dominated by rows of treadmills, ellipticals, and single purpose weight-stack machines,” said Bryan Green, Founder and CEO of Aktiv Solutions. “Today, exercisers are increasingly seeking open spaces to move and train with variation.”
With modalities that require a freer gym layout gaining popularity, the call for open space, even at the expense of machine availability, has never been louder. Aktiv Solutions is eager to answer that call.
The shift from traditional equipment-centric models to a more holistic, movement-based approach reflects a broader understanding of fitness as not just a way to achieve aesthetic goals, but as a way to enhance overall physical functionality.
What’s driving us right now?
Functional fitness has gained traction, emphasizing exercises that improve the body’s ability to perform daily activities, while high-intensity interval training (HIIT) offers efficient, effective workouts. Sports-specific training is also becoming increasingly popular, with programs tailored to meet the custom needs of both athletes and recreational participants. Recovery has also come to the forefront, with fitness facilities integrating dedicated spaces and services for stretching, relaxation and rehabilitation.
This movement-based philosophy not only enhances performance but also supports a sustainable, enjoyable approach to fitness, empowering individuals to lead healthier and more active lives. Gyms that accomplish this are gyms of the future.
The Rise of Movement-Based Training
For many years, gyms floors were littered by rows of treadmills, ellipticals and single-purpose weight-stack machines. Today, however, exercisers are increasingly seeking open spaces to move and train with greater variation, and with a lot of “toys” in the toy box, such as balls, bars, bands and much more. This shift is fueled by a desire for functional workouts that mimic real-life movements, preparing individuals for both daily activities and athletic pursuits.
“The fitness industry continues to experience a transformative shift, moving away from traditional, isolated equipment towards more dynamic and functional training experiences. This evolution is driven by a growing desire for workouts that prepare us for real-life movements and empower individuals to achieve their fitness goals in a more engaging and effective way.” says Green.
Perhaps the fastest-growing category among a wider spectrum of the population is sports-specific training. This tailored approach meets the unique needs of athletes and individuals participating in specific activities, from pickleball conditioning to youth sports specialization. Sports-specific training tailors movement to a particular sport’s demands, boosting performance and reducing injury risk. It focuses on relevant skills, movements and physical attributes, improving overall efficiency.
Many fitness facilities now offer specialized programs to meet these needs, helping individuals train effectively and achieve their goals, and more personal trainers than ever are finding sports-specific niches they can build a career around, whether its basketball training that emphasizes quick lateral movements and vertical jumps, or a focus on agility and kicking techniques for soccer.
“The rise of sports-specific training is a testament to the growing demand for personalized fitness experiences,” says Green. “Aktiv supports facilities in the creation of a myriad of specialized training environments that cater to the unique needs of athletes and individuals seeking to excel in their chosen sports. Facilities that provide engaging solutions and expert guidance tend to deliver exceptional results-driven experiences.”
The Role of Digital Guidance
Digital guidance has become an essential aspect of modern health clubs. Integrating technology into workout spaces helps members maintain proper form while providing motivation and inspiration. By offering personalized workout plans, progress tracking and engaging content, facilities are creating a more immersive and enjoyable experience for their members.
To accommodate this shift towards movement-based training, gyms are now investing in innovative equipment that facilitates open-space workouts and smarter storage solutions, with a keen focus on strength training. Functional training bays and free-weight areas provide versatile platforms for a variety of exercises from bodyweight movements to kettlebell swings, and plyometrics, and are an ideal application for digital guidance. .
“The fitness industry is clearly undergoing a digital transformation, and our AktivTV platform makes content integration a snap for facilities of all types” says Mike Kelly, Vice President of Global Sales for Aktiv.
“Facilities need plug and play tools to create and deploy engaging content to inspire members to reach their full potential. By providing zone specific scheduling, multi-screen deployments, and white label content, AktivTV helps facilities deliver exceptional value and drive member satisfaction,” says Kelly.
The Growing Importance of Recovery
Recovery plays a vital role in overall fitness and well-being, and people are finally understanding that rest supports effort in a key way. This change acknowledges that effective fitness regimens aren’t just about intense workouts, but also about allowing the body to repair and strengthen itself between sessions.
Many gyms are now incorporating dedicated recovery zones, equipped with tools and spaces designed to facilitate proper post-workout care. These areas may include:
Recovery-focused classes and workshops are also becoming more common, teaching members about the importance of rest, proper nutrition and stress management.
“With the increased demand for intensified training modalities, it’s more important than ever for exercise facilities to prioritize space and amenity for exercise recovery,” says Kelly. “By incorporating dedicated recovery zones and specialized programming where applicable, facilities can help members optimize their training results by reducing the risk of injury, and enhance the overall well-being for their members.”
Changing Expectations
As the fitness industry continues its shift towards movement-based training, digital integration, innovative equipment and recovery, gyms that can adapt to these changing preferences are more likely to succeed. By embracing emerging trends—such as interactive fitness technology, data-driven insights and diverse training modalities—health clubs can create more engaging and effective experiences and “zones.”
This emphasizes the importance of creating spaces that support a lifelong commitment to wellness. Facilities and practitioners at the forefront of these changes will play a crucial role in shaping the future of fitness, ensuring that it remains relevant, inclusive and accessible to all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds or fitness levels. Aktiv Solutions is at the forefront, providing innovative equipment, digital solutions and facility design expertise helping operators adapt to these dynamic trends.
The most successful fitness facilities will be those that can seamlessly blend movement-based training, cutting-edge technology, and a focus on holistic well-being. The gym of tomorrow is not just a place to work out, but a comprehensive wellness destination that empowers individuals to lead healthier, more active lives.

]]>The post Plus Fitness Eyes Gym Growth in UK, Asia appeared first on Athletech News.
]]>Plus Fitness, an Australia-based 24/7 gym franchise, is going abroad once again. The brand has agreed to a master franchise agreement that will bring its gyms to the United Kingdom, including at least one in 2025.
This move comes just weeks after Plus Fitness and its parent company Viva Leisure announced a similar deal to establish locations in Singapore and the Philippines. The initiatives stretch the brand’s reach to six geographical areas, having already established a presence in Australia, New Zealand and India.
“We’re excited to enter the U.K. market, which presents significant growth opportunities,” said Harry Konstantinou, CEO of Viva Leisure. “Our low-cost, high-reward franchise model will allow Plus Fitness to scale quickly and meet the growing demand for affordable fitness solutions.”
Viva Leisure oversees and operates several brands along with Plus Fitness including Club Lime, Club Pink, GroundUp, HIIT Republic and Psycle Life. It also recently helped fund Boutique Fitness Studios’ expansion in Australia and New Zealand.
The franchise agreement for Plus Fitness in the U.K. spans 10 years and includes an option to tack on two additional 10-year terms. The fitness brand views the U.K. as a hotbed for success, stating that only 15% of the area’s population owns a gym membership. Its low-cost, high-reward franchise model also makes it an attractive opportunity for entrepreneurs.
Plus Fitness was founded roughly 25 years ago, opening four branch locations before taking the franchising leap. It pivoted from featuring big-box gyms to smaller, lower-priced and 24/7 locations around 2009 and has been off and running ever since, now with over 200 sites.
But Plus Fitness isn’t the only gym brand eyeing the U.K. The Gym Group, a high-value, low-price (HVLP) gym operator, plans to open 50 new sites over the next three years. The U.K.-based Gym Group already accelerated its growth from 32 locations in 2012 to 233 gyms as of March.
Fitness software provider Xplor Mariana Tek and equipment supplier REP Fitness also both made advances into Europe this past year as well.

]]>The post The Fitness & Wellness Moves That Defined 2024 appeared first on Athletech News.
]]>The fitness and wellness industry is starting to settle into a post-pandemic rhythm, marked by people returning to gyms and studios in large numbers, a rising interest in longevity services and the surging popularity of modalities like strength training and Pilates.
This past year saw plenty of headlines, from major mergers to big-name brands filing for bankruptcy to CEO changes at the industry’s top companies.
Athletech News recaps the eight fitness and wellness moves that defined 2024, and forecasts what each could mean as we enter a new year.
PureGym, a leading U.K. gym operator, acquired most of Blink Fitness’ assets in a $121 million deal in December, which came after Blink filed for 11 bankruptcy. The deal will see 67 New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania-area Blink gyms rebranded under the PureGym banner in 2025.
The U.K. gym brand fended off competition from Planet Fitness, which made an unsuccessful last-minute bid to acquire the Blink gyms amid bankruptcy proceedings
Why It Matters:
PureGym is looking to establish a foothold in the U.S. market, and acquiring Blink’s East Coast gyms gives it just that. Blink also has around 30 gyms in California, Illinois, Massachusetts and Texas, and says it’s still evaluating offers for those locations.
What To Watch in 2025:
The U.S. market for low-price gyms is highly crowded and competitive, but Blink has carved out an impressive niche in the coveted New York metro area. PureGym will look to maintain Blink’s strong ties in the area while transitioning those gyms under its own branding.
Oura is fortifying its position as the leader in the burgeoning smart ring space, but the Finnish brand has some serious competition. Oura just completed a $200 million Series D funding round, raising the smart ring maker’s valuation to $5.2 billion. The new funding comes as Oura looks to make healthcare features like continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) a key part of its strategy moving forward.
Why It Matters:
Oura’s valuation is noteworthy in its own right, but it’s especially important as the company looks to fend off competition from Samsung, which recently entered the smart ring space with its Galaxy Ring, and Ultrahuman, an India-based smart ring maker that raised $35 million earlier this year.
What To Watch in 2025:
As wearable technology becomes a bigger part of fitness, wellness and potentially healthcare, the smart ring wars will be worth monitoring. Is Oura’s tech too advanced for Samsung and Ultrahuman to catch up, or can those brands encroach on the Finnish brand’s turf?
BowFlex filed for bankruptcy in March, but the at-home fitness equipment brand was quickly gobbled up by Johnson Health Tech Retail, the parent company of Matrix Fitness. Johnson Health Tech acquired BowFlex in a deal worth $37.5 million, and now sells BowFlex equipment alongside its other brands including Matrix, Vision Fitness, Schwinn and Horizon Fitness.
Why It Matters:
For all of BowFlex’s struggles over the past few years, the name still carries some weight among fitness consumers thanks to its 2000s-era glory days. For Johnson Health Tech, having both Matrix and BowFlex in its arsenal gives the Taiwan-based company a powerful one-two punch in the commercial and at-home fitness equipment markets, respectively.
What To Watch in 2025:
It will be interesting to see whether Johnson invests major resources into resuscitating BowFlex, or whether the once-proud brand becomes a bit player in the Taiwanese company’s larger portfolio.
This roundup wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Peloton, the connected fitness giant that’s fallen on some hard times but still enjoys a cult-like following among its 3 million or so paid subscribers.
This spring and summer, Peloton dealt with the exit of CEO Barry McCarthy, a new round of layoffs and the highly publicized departures of three popular instructors – Kristin McGee, Kendall Toole and Ross Rayburn.
Apple+ co-founder Peter Stern took over as Peloton’s new CEO in October, bringing his expertise in digital subscription businesses to the connected fitness company as it looks to grow its paid subscriber base and become less reliant on hardware sales.
Why It Matters:
Whether right or wrong, Peloton still serves as a proxy for the entire connected fitness industry, which has struggled to find its footing in a post-pandemic world where people workout inside gyms and at home. Peloton’s financial struggles will be tough to overcome, but Stern is a hopeful appointment given his background at Apple and Time Warner Cable.
What To Watch in 2025:
Peloton is trying hard to win over general fitness enthusiasts, recently releasing a strength training app and launching a campaign led by the NFL’s Watt brothers designed to appeal to Millennial males. The connected fitness giant doesn’t want to be just a bike company, a mission it struggled to make good on in 2024. Will 2025 be the year Peloton becomes known for digital fitness content instead of just cycling?
Anthony Geisler, who founded Xponential Fitness in 2017 and grew it into the world’s largest franchisor of boutique fitness and wellness brands via acquisitions, was dismissed as the brand’s CEO in May. The stunning news came after Xponential received notice of an investigation by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. Other executive leaders have left Xponential in 2024, most notably Sarah Luna, who had served as the company’s president since 2021.
To replace Geisler, Xponential hired former Taco Bell chief Mark King as its new CEO. The Irvine, California-based company has also brought on new executive talent including Bob Kaufman as president of international and Duncan Cork, a former F45 Training exec.
Besides executive upheaval, Xponential divested from two brands in 2024, selling Stride Fitness and Row House while also “winding down” its affiliation with AKT. Xponential’s portfolio now consists of eight brands – BFT, Club Pilates, CycleBar, Lindora, Pure Barre, Rumble Boxing, StretchLab and YogaSix.
Why It Matters:
Xponential enters 2025 with a radically different executive leadership team from the one it had at the beginning of 2024. It’s unclear how the new-look Xponential will differ from the old guard, but King brings high-level franchising experience from Taco Bell.
What To Watch in 2025:
Will Xponential sell any more brands? The franchisor has hinted that it wants to devote more attention to its top-performing brands like Club Pilates and StretchLab while also looking to grow trendy concepts like BFT and Lindora. As a result, other brands could be on the chopping block. It’s also possible that Xponential looks to re-grow its portfolio with another acquisition in the coming year. Additionally, King has stated that Xponential plans to ramp up its international expansion efforts in 2025.
Orangetheory Fitness and Anytime Fitness parent Self Esteem Brands completed a merger of equals transaction in April, creating one of the world’s largest fitness and wellness brands with around 7,000 global franchise locations and $3.5 billion in systemwide sales.
A new holding company, Purpose Brands, will oversee Orangetheory, Anytime Fitness and other fitness brands in the portfolio, with former Topgolf CEO Tom Leverton tapped to lead the new entity.
Why It Matters:
With the one-two punch of Orangetheory and Anytime, Purpose Brands instantly becomes one of the most powerful global fitness brands. While OTF and Anytime will retain their own identities, the brands will lean on each other for franchising support, data and technology integration and other strategic initiatives. In the era of AI, having access to that much data should give Purpose Brands an advantage over other fitness brands.
What To Watch in 2025:
Orangetheory has already begun to adjust its strategy following the merger. The iconic group fitness group brand just launched a new ad campaign and is eyeing a broader rebranding strategy that includes a refreshed color palette, new digital designs and in-studio changes, all of which are designed to align OTF with post-pandemic wellness trends.
It was quite the year for Planet Fitness, with the high-value, low-price (HVLP) gym giant raising its base membership price from $10 to $15/month and naming Colleen Keating as its new CEO to replace Chris Rondeau, whose exit shocked the fitness world in 2023.
Planet Fitness’ decision to raise its Class Card price to $15/month marked the gym brand’s first membership price increase in nearly 30 years. Investors and analysts have told ATN the move was necessary amid inflation.
Why It Matters:
Keating, who served as CEO of a rental home property management company and has held leadership roles at major hotel chains, takes over at a pivotal time for Planet Fitness. The company is still top dog in the HVLP gym space with around 20 million members and more than 2,600 locations, but it’s facing increased competition from upstarts like Crunch Fitness, Vasa Fitness, EōS and others.
What To Watch in 2025:
Planet Fitness has given some early glimpses into its new strategy under Keating. The gym brand plans to revamp its marketing approach to position itself as a gym for serious fitness enthusiasts rather than just casual gym-goers. In line with that plan, Planet Fitness intends to add more strength training equipment inside its gyms and cut down on cardio. At least some investors believe this strategy will pay off for Planet Fitness in 2025.
Solidcore continues to take the boutique fitness world by storm, and it’s just getting started. In September, the Pilates-inspired boutique fitness brand was acquired by private equity firm L Catterton in a deal that reportedly values the brand at between $600 and $700 million.
Why It Matters:
The deal marks a win not only for Solidcore but the entire Pilates space. The mind-body fitness modality surged in popularity in 2024 and shows no signs of slowing down in 2025 as brands like Solidcore and others open brick-and-mortar studios at a rapid clip across the country.
What To Watch in 2025:
Solidcore has ambitious expansion plans under president and CEO Bryan Myers. The boutique fitness brand already has over 100 open locations and said last year that it’s eyeing as many as 250 studios by 2028. L Catterton’s backing gives Solidcore even more ammunition for expansion; the brand is planning to open around 30 new locations in 2025 alone, ATN learned.

]]>The celebrity factor remains unmatched when it comes to high-profile endorsements and business ventures. In recent years, the fitness and wellness industry has become a magnet for stars who’ve graced the red carpet, battled in the ring or delivered a drum solo mid-air.
ATN looks back at some of the most significant moves in fitness and wellness this year from the names you know (and maybe love).
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Pump app features training plans crafted by Schwarzenegger and his team, a personalized habit tracker, guided workout videos and a passionate community of like-minded fitness enthusiasts.
“This is the best workout program you’ve ever had. Just trust me,” Schwarzenegger wrote in a post regarding the launch. “This isn’t like the fitness apps that let you go from one program to another because that’s not how you will progress. And I would rather have 100,000 users with amazing progress than a million frustrated they’re stagnant.”
“Thor” actor Chris Hemsworth may have launched his home fitness ecosystem Centr before 2024, but his brand continues to evolve from its inception as a fitness app.
This fall, Centr debuted a premium treadmill collection, catering to several price points and fitness levels. Each treadmill includes a free, three-month membership to Centr’s personalized fitness and wellness app.
Not to be outdone, actor and entrepreneur Mark Wahlberg announced in November that he partnered with high-value, low-price (HVLP) fitness operator EōS Fitness to launch Municipal Gym.
“The first time in history that luxury and serious fitness meet,” Wahlberg said in a social media clip hyping the new fitness and recovery concept slated to open in Summerlin, Nevada. “Recovery, rejuvenation therapy, juice bars, cafe, retail stores – only the best vitamins and supplements for you. Big, crazy collabs.”
In addition to state-of-the-art equipment, Municipal Gym will feature recovery amenities such as cryotherapy, compression therapy, infrared saunas, eucalyptus steam rooms and cold plunges.
Another star of the 90’s – Jennifer Aniston – has also been influential in the world of fitness.
The former “Friends” star is in a new chapter of her life as the face of female-focused functional fitness brand Pvolve. She headlined Pvolve’s latest brand campaign, crediting the fitness method for making her “stronger than ever.”
Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker catapulted into the wellness space with Barker Wellness in 2021, but this year marked a milestone as the vegan brand launched in Sprouts stores nationwide.
From THC-free cannabinoid-infused products to CBD and mushroom adaptogen gummies, wellness body oils and recovery balms, Barker Wellness is flourishing at a time when consumers are looking for more natural ways to unwind and recharge.
His wife, Kourtney (of Kardashian fame), also lends her name to some of the products under the Kourtney x Barker Wellness label.
While Gwyneth Paltrow is credited for the rise of “better-for-you” products for women, men are getting into the action, as well.
Look no further than W, a men’s personal care brand free of sulfates, artificial dyes and parabens, all for less than $10 a product.
Co-founded by Jake Paul (who is certainly no stranger to fitness or recovery), W launched exclusively in Walmart stores in June and scored over seven figures in sales in its first month. Since then, the brand has raised $14 million in funding, which will be directed toward product and retail expansion.
“When we looked at men’s care, we saw a lot of brands targeting and serving that older generation, but Jake’s demographic – 10 to 30-year-old males – wasn’t being focused on,” W co-founder and CEO Woodie Hillyard told ATN. “There’s this massive gap in the market that Axe used to fill, but no one really fills it anymore. We just felt like there needed to be a different brand, with a unique mission, in this space.”

]]>Personal trainers are getting more support when it comes to helping their clients cut down on alcohol consumption.
ABC Trainerize has partnered with mindful drinking app Sunnyside to provide fitness coaches and personal trainers with resources to support their clients who participate in “Dry-ish” January, a play on Dry January, a popular public health initiative that sees people abstain from alcohol consumption in the new year.
With the partnership, fit pros who use ABC Trainerize will get access to Sunnyside tools for personalized alcohol-reduction, including daily habit-tracking templates, communication tools and evidence-based insights on the benefits of reducing alcohol intake.
ABC Trainerize, a leading software platform for fitness coaches and personal trainers under the ABC Fitness portfolio, has seen the tracking of alcohol-related habits increase nearly 3x over the last few years on its app, it reports.
“At ABC Trainerize, we are focused on empowering trainers and coaches to deliver life-changing fitness and wellness experiences,” said ABC Trainerize platform president Sharad Mohan. “In fact, alcohol-related habits are one of our most-tracked habits on the app, so by partnering with Sunnyside, we are expanding the definition of wellness to include mindful drinking, helping trainers support their clients in achieving both their fitness and lifestyle goals.”
Dry(ish) January initiatives come as the personal training industry embraces holistic health and wellness. Gone are the days when trainers could design a simple workout routine for their clients and call it a day. As the wellness market continues to grow, fitness enthusiasts increasingly expect personal trainers to act as go-to sources of information for general health and wellness, including sleep, mindfulness and, in some cases, alcohol consumption.
Last year, the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) launched a continuing education course for personal trainers called “Mindful Drinking,” which delves into alcohol’s influence on wellness pillars like nutrition, sleep, cognitive function and physical activity. The course also gives fit pros resources for understanding society’s relationship with alcohol.

]]>Sunny Health & Fitness has expanded into strength training equipment with its new Sunny Strength Line. The company, known for cardio equipment manufacturing over the past 20 years, introduced a collection including racks, benches, smith machines, free weights, dumbbells, and bars.
The launch marks the company’s evolution from a cardio-focused manufacturer to a comprehensive fitness equipment provider. The new strength line integrates with the SunnyFit app, offering workout plans, fitness tracking, and progress monitoring capabilities.
The launch of the Sunny Strength Line comes at a time when strength training is surging in popularity across diverse demographics. Approximately 30.2% of U.S. adults meet the exercise recommendations of engaging in two or more strength-training sessions per week, while 57.8% report not participating in strength training at all. The American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) annual survey ranked traditional strength training as the 5th top fitness trend for 2025, indicating a resurgence in its popularity.
Regular strength training is associated with numerous health benefits, including increased muscle mass, improved bone density, enhanced joint health, and a reduced risk of chronic diseases. Of note, there is a growing interest in strength training among women, challenging traditional stereotypes and recognizing its benefits for overall health and fitness.
The Sunny Strength line features coordinated color schemes designed for home gym environments. The collection aims to serve both beginner and advanced users through its range of strength training products.
The company’s digital integration through the SunnyFit app provides personalized workout plans and tracking features. Sunny Health & Fitness continues to serve both home and commercial gym markets while expanding into the strength training sector.

GLP-1 medications are here to stay, whether you like it or not. For the fitness industry, these weight-loss wonder drugs might hold the key to getting more Americans inside gyms and studios.
ATN breaks down a report from investment banking firm Harrison Co., which posits that the total addressable market for U.S. fitness clubs (including gyms and boutique studios) is expected to increase by $6.8 billion as a result of more people taking GLP-1s.
The hypothesis, advanced by Harrison Co. and other fitness industry stakeholders, is that as more people start losing weight as a result of GLP-1s, they’ll be more inclined to want to work out.
“I think it’s one of the biggest opportunities to come along for the industry in a long time,” Paul Byrne, a partner in Harrison Co.’s Fitness & VMS practice, told Athletech News.

A growing interest in longevity, combined with the perceived failures of the current American healthcare system, has created space for gyms and fitness facilities to meet the needs of disenchanted patients – a staggering 70% of United States adults believe the healthcare system fails to meet their needs in at least one way, according to Harris Poll data.
ATN breaks down how gyms, clubs and other fitness brands are positioning themselves as accessible options for preventive health and wellness.

Everybody loves a good rankings article, especially when local pride is on the line. In maybe the most shocking fitness and wellness news of the year, Xponential Fitness founder and longtime CEO Anthony Geisler left the boutique fitness and wellness franchisor in May following a notice of investigation by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.
Xponential appears to have rebounded well from Geisler’s departure, with its stock price up on the year and new CEO Mark King, the former chief executive of Taco Bell, bullish on the company’s growth prospects, including international expansion plans for Xpo’s brands including Club Pilates, StretchLab and Pure Barre.
As for Geisler, he spoke with ATN this past summer in an exclusive interview, addressing his departure from Xponential, analyzing the fitness and wellness landscape, and sharing his predictions for the future.

Earlier this year, Planet Fitness interim CEO Craig Benson presented during the ICR Conference 2024, where he shed light on the low-price gym giant’s plans for the future, including its new franchise growth model, talks of a membership price increase (which PF would go on to implement in May) and efforts to appeal to Gen Z.
While Colleen Keating took over as Planet Fitness’ new CEO this past summer, it’s still worth revisiting Benson’s comments, which outline some of the key tenets of the fitness franchise’s strategy for 2025.

For Orangetheory, the campaign will serve as the springboard for a broader rebranding strategy that includes a refreshed color palette, new digital designs and in-studio changes.
In this story, ATN speaks to an Orangetheory executive about the brand’s new marketing strategy, which comes as the fitness industry continues to evolve amid post-pandemic realities.

Beachbody’s famous (or infamous) multi-level marketing (MLM) model is no more. The iconic fitness company, known for workouts such as P90X and Insanity, has fallen on some hard times as of late, although it’s looking to change course under a new name, BODi.
ATN breaks down BODi’s decision to axe its controversial MLM model in favor of a single-level affiliate program, which came in tandem with BODi’s decision to shed approximately 33% of its staff as part of a streamlining strategy.

Orangetheory makes a second appearance on ATN’s 2024 Most Popular list, this time for a story exploring the fitness brand’s new parent company, Purpose Brands.
Formed following the mega merger between Orangetheory and Anytime Fitness parent Self Esteem Brands, Purpose Brands will act as the holding company comprising Orangetheory, Anytime, The Bar Method, Basecamp/Sumhiit Fitness and Waxing the City, among other entities.
ATN looks at Purpose Brands’ new strategy, with exclusive insights from its CEO Tom Leverton, Anytime Fitness co-founder Chuck Runyon and Orangetheory co-founder Dave Long.

We close out this list with a feel-good story courtesy of Planet Fitness. ATN breaks down the low-price gym giant’s “Flexing for Good” volunteer initiative, an annual event where Planet Fitness team members and franchisees lend their support to local communities.
“Flexing for Good” generates approximately 800 volunteer hours both in-person and virtually for non-profits including Boys & Girls Clubs of America. In fact, since 2016, Planet Fitness has donated more than $9.5 million to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, proving that fitness can be a force for good in more ways than one.
